Oh wow! We already have a new Sepulchral Curse album. It feels like yesterday when the band released Abhorrent Dimensions. So far, I only have good things to say about this Finnish pack—they deliver massive and evil Death Metal with zero remorse. However, it’s always been evident to me that the band could take another path. Maybe in Crimson Moon Evocations, the Finns will show us old-school Death Metal in a different way. Or maybe I’m just being hopeful…
So, let’s get something out of the way: Crimson is a shift in the band’s formula. It’s a change I welcome warmly, especially since it’s easy to stagnate in this type of Death Metal. However, Sepulchral Curse has chosen a more melodic approach—not in the Death/Doom sense, but more in the Sulphur Aeon way. The “tender” (right…) side is used to add urgency and complexity to the slaughter. In other words, it’s not just about headbanging but also about making blood boil. And I think, in many moments, the album expands the depths of the band’s sound.
You get solid vocals straight out of a hell vortex (even if they’re a bit one-note), and blast beats that amplify everything going on without drowning it. However, the real stars are the terrific guitar work and songwriting. Despite staying true to pure Death Metal aesthetics, the band continues to evolve throughout the album in different and engaging ways. I was expecting to feel numb by the halfway mark, but nope—it hasn’t happened yet. As you know, nothing in this life is perfect, so let’s discuss the challenges Crimson brings to the table (be amazed by my diplomatic use of language!).

They get charged for smiling
I love the massive and gigantic sound that Sepulchral Curse has always had, but I also have to point out that this thing is loud—be prepared to blow out a few speakers if you get too excited. Also, while the band is still young, and experimentation is just beginning, I’d be so curious to see them take a more Proggy approach to their work. The talent is undeniably there! It’s just a matter of risking it all—maybe they’ll end up being hated by all of us, but hey, that’s the curse of the artist, kids. So maybe get a job in accounting if you can’t handle the heat.
Now we know that Sepulchral Curse is synonymous with quality—not just consistency. Time will tell if this album grows on me even more, but for now, I can safely say it’s my favorite in the band’s catalog. If you’re looking for something with a little bit of every classic Death Metal subgenre, look no further. Because, as usual, the answer is in Finland (just like when I want good rice pierogi).
