We’re back with what the tide brought in over the last few days. It was an intense release week, but was it equally intense in the deep underground department? Today, we have a lot of familiar faces, but each brings something unique to the table. Because, let’s face it, most of you aren’t satisfied with not getting paid for one project—you have to juggle several. Nothing but respect for that, I’ll just say. Now, let’s dive in!

The Host – Lords of Chaos: Another single from a guest we’ve featured here before. With a title that screams Black Metal, you’d expect something straight out of Norway. Yet, this track strikes a good balance between Black and Death Metal, with an extra layer of grit that channels the anger of both worlds. The Host is a promising band that actually reminds me of old Belphegor—what else do you need to know? Click here!

Ashenheart – Tales From Eternal Dusk: Honestly, I don’t know how many more projects Steve from Am I in Trouble can juggle, but this one is another interesting addition. It’s Medieval fantasy Black Metal, which could easily sound like just another half-raw Black Metal album. What really makes it stand out, though, is the use of cemetery-like synths. It ends up feeling like the soundtrack to a creepy video game. And since I can’t take a break from being a snob and playing a game or two, you could do that too! Click here!

Ancine – Death Hymns II: Book of Tribulation: Now for a complete change of scenery. I don’t know why Western Metal is getting stronger lately, but keep it coming! Ancine is a great example of this. This almost Gothic/Doom/Folk Metal album is a puzzling take that will appeal to those of you with a curious ear. I didn’t fully grasp all the recordings and void noises, but they do help the atmosphere grow on you. It’s proof that you can be thematically solid and extremely weird at the same time. Click here!
There you have it, kids—some old friends, some new friends. That’s what we’re here for. All of these bands offer a totally different experience, so depending on how depressed you are, you can tune in to your favorite kind of suffering! Or maybe that’s just my way of going about it. Anyway, who’s hungry?
