Putridity – Morbid Ataraxia

Metalcatto

Look at that cover art! Doesn’t it give you a Freudian whiplash? Or remind you of better times? (Before you were born! Those were the days.) Putridity is a Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore band, but you probably figured that out from the album’s colorful title: Morbid Ataraxia. You know this stuff is heavy when you have to check the dictionary to understand just how vile and repulsive the title is. But was it any good? Let’s find out.

To say Morbid Ataraxia is trying to pull you out of your mother without decency is an understatement. This is obscene heaviness that reminds me how disturbing Metal can get—at times even feeling like a satire of itself. I don’t think these guys are here to play games beyond destroying your eardrums as thoroughly as possible. And if that sounds ambiguous, that’s because it is. I don’t even know if that’s a compliment or an insult. It depends on how twisted you are, kid.

So yes, everything here is nasty, but the snare takes the cake. It blasts your head so hard you might actually explode. And for you weirdos out there, that probably just made your heart beat faster. There’s a lot of technicality but not a lot of complexity in Morbid Ataraxia. Tracks come and go with no real ceremony, each one dragging you deeper into the pit. Except for the final track—but I’ll save that little monster for the most brutal part of the review.

The challenge with Brutal Death Metal and Grindcore is that they can numb you out from sheer relentless aggression, and Morbid Ataraxia has a few moments like that. The onslaught gets so constant, you stop feeling surprised. The pacing isn’t the issue, though—it holds up, even rivaling acts like Benighted. But then we reach “Inmerse in the Spell of Death,” and suddenly the old Meshuggah-style experimental itch goes wild. A twelve-minute track made mostly of “evil” atmosphere? It totally derails the flow. The rest of the album is fine—nothing revolutionary, but solid—yet that closer shifts everything off balance.

Putridity is clawing for recognition in one of the most trend-heavy corners of Metal. The production and technical precision are impressive, but this album mostly sticks to what you already expect from Brutal Death Metal. That’s great news if you’re one of those die-hard meat grinder fanatics, but less exciting if you like your Metal with just a little less felony involved. Also, maybe don’t eat lunch while listening to this one. The lyrics are… colorful.
