Violent Bursts: Short Works to Pummel Your Brain Out

Metalcatto

I was thinking two things. First it’s been a while since we reviewed something properly heavy and second, how about some quick EPs or mini-albums that embody the spirit of Grind and Brutal Death well. So, here we have two short works that will be out soon and I think are worth the few seconds they last. For real, I finally found something our distracted readers can stick to, if hopefully they can even manage to finish this article. So let’s start with the mayhem!

Barren PathGrieving: If there’s one niche we neglect at MER it’s Grindcore, but here we are, trying to atone for our sins. Grieving is so freaking short that you’ve probably spent more time today on the toilet seat already. Saying this thing is obscene is an understatement. No track goes over the 1:30 mark. However, there’s substance and quality riffs in this brief beatdown, especially that snare which pays great homage to old Cryptopsy. The only thing I don’t get is why a mini-album this short needs an interlude track. Seriously, you’re in Grindcore and your release is less than 14 minutes long. We don’t need a break! Aside from that, it’s a fast way to displace your anger issues in a healthier way than you’re used to. Release date: October 31st.

De ProfundisGospel of Rot: Honestly, any excuse to talk about De Profundis is a good one. No other band balances technicality, groove, and melody quite like it. Even with the incredibly controversial lyrics, the band is just magnetic. And that’s no different with Gospel of Rot. The writing might be a bit more straightforward here, but that doesn’t mean you’re getting out unscathed. The tracks are still full of crushing riffs, thick bass lines, and ultra-hostile vocals. The only issue I could point out is that, like any EP, it has to be compared with the band’s past albums that are all 4/5 work if we’re being conservative and classics if we’re being optimistic. So if you haven’t jumped onto the De Profundis hype train, what are you doing with your life? Stop wasting it! Release date: October 1st.

Well, that’s it! Stay tuned for these releases and go check out these bands’ back catalogues (if there’s any), because you can’t afford proper healing, but I’m sure you can get another CD/LP to try to fill the endless void inside! It’s the least you can do, right? Ah, this was supposed to be an angry post not a sad one! Anyway, cheers!
