We have an interesting history with bands somehow inspired by Kaiju (just click here!). That said, the Heavy Metal act Jet Jaguar isn’t exactly what I review daily — usually, Elyna takes on all that uplifting stuff that makes my fur fall off. But Jet Jaguar’s Severance had that nerdy name that made the Metalkitten (my son) say, “Take the one about the robot that fights Godzilla!” I’m pretty sure that’s not what they were going for, but hey — I guess I need to experience different things before time runs out! Let’s begin.
This album hit me in unexpected ways. It’s the very definition of a blast! Imagine your happiest and most intense moments condensed into a four-minute song (I know some of you have never experienced happiness for that long, but please try to imagine it!). Catchy, engaging, and constantly grabbing your attention, Severance is something I didn’t know I needed. It’s Metal that reminds me not everything has to be dark, gloomy, or edgy — sometimes it can just be about writing awesome riffs and getting wasted in the process! If Glam Metal were respectable, it would sound like Jet Jaguar.
Severance is one of the most guitar-driven albums I’ve reviewed in a long time. It glows with beautiful, captivating melodies and guitar solos that sound like they came from another era — one where people were obsessed with their instruments instead of their brand. That’s not to say everyone else in the band is slacking off — the rhythm section and overall songwriting keep things simple but thoroughly enjoyable. I don’t usually like old-school Heavy Metal that much, but when I do, it feels like getting high on gunpowder mixed with tobacco (a horrendous idea, just saying!).

I didn’t know it was that cold in Mexico!
Despite its track-by-track brevity, I did start to drift a bit by the time we reached the eighth track. The remixes and bonus material, while impressive on their own, make the full experience drag on longer than necessary. A tighter, more cohesive structure might have benefited Severance, even if that’s a strange thing to say about a traditional Metal album. Still, I’m always hoping bands will break the rules a little, and though Jet Jaguar sticks to the formula incredibly well, a few risks could’ve made things even more exciting.
If you want to experience joy on a level that won’t embarrass your extreme Metal credentials in front of your friends, Severance offers a pleasant surprise. It restored my faith in retro sounds that are supposed to prey on people with hip replacements. Oh no — have I become an old cat already? But I have good knees! Nooo! Anyway, go give Jet Jaguar some well-deserved respect.
