Greyhawk – Warriors of Greyhawk

Metalcatto

Explosions! Unicorns! Dragons! Now that I have your power metal attention, I should talk to you about Greyhawk‘s new album, Warriors of the Greyhawk. I assume they’re talking about themselves with this title. I’ll do my absolute best to give these guys a fair chance, despite my eternal disdain for anything that is remotely corny or happy. A reviewer needs to keep evolving; otherwise, we just become bitter old people like most. So, let’s start this riff extravaganza.

So, yes, Warriors of the Greyhawk has that winning combo of pristine production, flashy guitars, and epic moments that have become a quality seal for the subgenre. What I found the most interesting about Warriors is how incredibly and deliberately uplifting it feels. Every time a segment was about to turn edgy or dark, it didn’t. It just decided to ride that pegasus directly into the rainbows over and over again. That requires serious commitment to the geeky craft, a dedicated optimism that one can’t help but respect here and there, actually.

Yet, the vocals and the guitar solos are the album’s forte. Yes, there’s a lot of shred and high-pitched vocals. You’ve probably heard it all before, but it’s executed so well that it made me forget how many freaking times I’ve heard a singer hit that high note like he just hit his pinky toe against a table (you thought I was going to say something else—admit you have a dirty mind!). The vocal performance is consistently powerful and clear, perfectly cutting through the dense instrumental layers, while the solos are melodic fireworks displays that serve the songs rather than just showcasing ego.

I’m being all nice and rosy here, but there are a few points to warn you about before you start to swing your plastic swords in your mother’s basement again. There are a lot of fireworks here. It’s all bombastic and intense, but it sticks faithfully to the established blueprint of what Power Metal has always given us. Sure, the quality is above average, but don’t expect anything revolutionary or disruptive. If you’re familiar with this kind of high-fantasy, D&D-inspired sound, then you know exactly what you’re getting: triumphant melodies, galloping rhythms, and lyrics steeped in heroic myth. So, as usual, the album is safer than driving with a seatbelt on in Monaco (check the stats!).

Ultimately, this is Elyna‘s cup of tea—an album that does well everything the subgenre is known for without committing any of the disgusting, over-the-top excesses that make me feel covered in metaphorical glitter. Greyhawk has indeed crafted something fun to offer, and they’ve done so with a commendable degree of musical proficiency and earnest passion. They understand their audience and deliver a product that satisfies that specific, heroic craving without apology. What else do you geeks want? This is perfect for those moments when only unadulterated, sword-raising escapism will do.
