EP Madness part 5

Metalcatto

I always say the love EPs get on this blog is the same attention your body gets from you. So you see, we usually don’t care and go through them with little respect. They’re leftovers after all, right? Well, sometimes I make an effort and chug a few EPs back to back to see if any of them are worth our time. Here are a few of those.

ForeignWolf – Merely Mortal: Loud and angsty, this EP is a nostalgia trip to the 2010s “mainstream” Metal scene. It has touches of Melodic Death Metal and Deathcore, even some Nu-Metal creeping in around the edges. The trick here is that none of those elements becomes dominant, so you end up with something oddly accessible but also heavier than your monthly bills. I wouldn’t call it refreshing exactly, but it was definitely a blast that hits right in the teenage feelings. It’s not out yet, but you only have to wait until April the 3rd. The production is clean enough to reach a wide audience while retaining enough bite to satisfy those who want their aggression served with clarity.

No Terror In the Bang – Existence: Coming from what seems to be the same pool of influences, No Terror In The Bang arrives at a different conclusion. The band approaches its extreme Metal in a more idiosyncratic way, refusing to settle into predictable patterns. It’s hard to compare it with anything directly, but if ODC and Jinjer could somehow merge into one band, maybe this is what we’d end up with. The rhythms shift unexpectedly, the vocals cover a wide range, and nothing stays in one place for too long. So, if you want your more digestible Metal to still hit like a truck, this EP can do the job. You also have to wait until April the 3rd for this one.

Relic – Crown of Flies: I saved the most brutal for last. See? That’s how much I care for you. How can I put this? The vocals are totally disgusting in the best possible way. It’s supposed to be a Black/Death Metal run, but it really dives deep into the nasty and brutal side of things, leaving little room for subtlety. There’s next to no romanticism or moments to breathe here. It’s just beatdown after beatdown with no mercy whatsoever. Luckily it’s short and will leave you alive by the end, though perhaps slightly shaken. This one is also coming out April the 3rd, so mark your calendar if you have the stomach for it.

And there you have it. I gave some attention to the material people usually listen to once on YouTube or Spotify and then move on to sadder, more painful things. Still, we should enjoy the little things every once in a while. Here’s me trying to close an article with sunshine and rainbows for once. Gross!
