I remember this time last year I was worrying about not having listened to enough music… Well, let’s just say that version of me would call my present self a lazy slob in that regard. But, the only thing I can do in that regard other than try and put together this Judgement Day of a list, is to hope that 2026 will find me in a place where I actually pull myself together enough to keep up with music properly. However, despite all that, choosing what went in or was left out of this list ended up being a surprisingly difficult endeavor, since the underground has been undoubtedly just as busy as always. But now I will spare you of my ceaseless lamenting and get on with the list.

Corridoré – Abandon

In many ways, there are two types of metal bands: the ones that want to have fun and Rock n’ Roll, and the ones that want to send you on a reflective and pessimistic trip into the aches of the human condition. If you haven’t figured it out by the beautiful and bleak cover art, Corridoré belongs to the second type. But does Abandon do more than copy Falls of Rauros or Neurosis? You know I have a soft spot for sad Post-Metal, but that doesn’t mean I’m handing out good scores the way Elyna does! I’m much grumpier than that.

Cercle du Chêne – Récits d’Automne et de Chasse

You look at Cercle du Chêne‘s Récits d’Automne et de Chasse art and think, “Oh, this must sound lovely and cute—it’ll remind me of my happy days watching Disney movies.” However, a seasoned reviewer like me sees this art and thinks, “Oh no! This is probably going to sound like Watership Down and have a lot of talking because it’s French Black Metal, and they have to let us know it’s French, you know?” Still, I was curious to see what this strange mix of Dungeon Synth and Black Metal had to offer. I mean, we tend to not even listen to these kinds of albums at MER, but sometimes, the underdogs deserve a chance in life.

The world was a different place seven years ago. At least when it comes to its currently troubled corner that I happen to inhabit. No joys of pestilence, no thrills of societal cataclysms, just life in all its glorious bleakness and naive hopefulness. It was a genuinely decent time. I’ve seen worse. And it was in that relatively peaceful summer of 2018 that I stumbled upon an album premiere video by a certain one-woman Pagan Black Metal project from Finland. The artist’s name was Vermilia, the record was entitled Kätkyt, and it took me about a song and a half to fall in love, pause the stream, relocate to her Bandcamp page, and click “order”. That’s how I became a fan. Years rolled by, and here we are in 2025, with Vermilia’s third LP fresh from the metaphorical oven and waiting to be discovered.
