Suffering so you don't have to!
We keep giving chances to bands just starting their promising careers in this ruthless, kill-or-be-killed arena we call the Metal scene. I won’t sit here and pretend I knew who Aberrator was, or that I saw the album title Beckoning Tribulation and thought, “This is the next big thing!” But when I saw that beautiful and tasteful cover art, I thought: “Alright, that does it—this should at least be fun!” So, here we are, ready to taste another heavy meal.

Galloping out of the fetid tunnels of darkest London after twenty-something years of silence, Adorior stops by only for a brief moment—but fear ye not! They simply want to make sure you’re bloodied, trampled, set afire, and offered up to Satan. Then, they’ll be on their merry way. Oh, and if you want to hold on to your bottles of strong booze and unravished virgins, you’d better hide them somewhere safe, because Adorior has come for those as well. To enact pandemonium on the scale described, key contributors from the likes of Grave Miasma, Qrixquor, and Destroyer 666 are at the helm—in other words, noted veterans of the metal underground.
When you feel anger, despair, or just good old desolation, it’s hard to find the right soundtrack. I hear you! There’s a lot of heavy bands out there, but not many can truly capture the feeling of being utterly lost in anguish. Har is here to offer something hideous and immoral. You could almost call it Curse Creation. Before you start salivating in a Pavlovian manner, keep reading to find out if this is what your broken spirit needs to accept its inability to recover and live a functional life. Too dark? Vanhelgd‘s newest album, Atropos Doctrina, has everything a reviewer would expect from a Swedish death metal band: the hard-to-pronounce name, the paganism, the cool art. What’s not to like? If anything, I was just concerned that this album would be another consistent and dirty 40+ minutes of music from the north. I always say before starting these reviews: if I get another Swedish band that wants to sound like Entombed or Dismember, I’m going to score it below 2.5 (and get canceled by the metal world in the process, of course). So, is Vanhelgd going to get me banned from the socials again, or is there hope?
As you know, Northern Europe is legendary for its Metal production. Each country has its niche. Norway excels in old-school Black and Avant-Garde, Sweden in Death and Black, Iceland in Black and Post, and Finland is pretty much good at everything. Did I miss anyone? Ah, right, there’s Denmark, known for…Mercyful Fate? A few underground bands? (I love you, Saturnus!) Awkward, but there’s one band in the last decade that has come to restore Danish honor: Hyperdontia. Today, we’re talking about Harvest of Malevolence. Er du klar? Ready?
