I know that when you hear the words one-man Black Metal band, your heart fills with dread—especially if it leans toward the atmospheric side. However, today we’re doing something different. Sakna is a project that existed in hard drives for decades, but after the tragic passing of its creator, his brother S. took on the task of restoring Solemn’s legacy. Hence, this review is written with more respect than usual, because what could be more Black Metal than an artist speaking to us from the grave? De Syv Dødssynder is here!

Corridoré – Abandon

In many ways, there are two types of metal bands: the ones that want to have fun and Rock n’ Roll, and the ones that want to send you on a reflective and pessimistic trip into the aches of the human condition. If you haven’t figured it out by the beautiful and bleak cover art, Corridoré belongs to the second type. But does Abandon do more than copy Falls of Rauros or Neurosis? You know I have a soft spot for sad Post-Metal, but that doesn’t mean I’m handing out good scores the way Elyna does! I’m much grumpier than that.

A Flock Named Murder – Incendiary Sanctum

A surefire way to pique my interest is to record one song and call it an album. However, not many things can be Dopesmoker or Crimson. A slightly more realistic move in today’s age of thirty-second attention spans is to put four humongous songs next to each other and call them an album. And in A Flock Named Murder – Incendiary Sanctum‘s case, I found it quite hard to lose focus.

Nepenthe – The Fading Promise of Tomorrow & Elegies of Loss and Doom

I discovered Nepenthe shortly after writing my review of its labelmates, QAALM, and its mighty offering, A Grave Impression of an Unbroken Arc, under Hypaethral Records. Having found in that album an excellent blend of styles, the description of this Ontario-based band was enough to pique my interest. Would they manage to incorporate these diverse styles into a cohesive blend of their own?
