True kvlt: Veln, Valfreya, Ghost of Agony & Crownless King

As we navigate the storm of endless submissions, we’ve encountered an interesting bunch from all walks of life, spanning from MeloDeath to Prog Metal. True kvlt is like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re going to get, but you hope to avoid the licorice ones. Shall we start?

VelnVeln: Alright, how can I say this? This freaking slays! Remember when I said that Prog Metal similar to Morningrise was kind of dead? Well, Veln is here to prove me wrong. The production isn’t my favorite—I’d prefer something more polished—and the jumps between tracks are awkward. But the melancholy of these riffs and the well-thought transitions click with my inner child! Don’t let its blackened surface fool you; Veln is a return to a style we had lost long ago, and I, for one, might even buy this True kvlt gem. Click here!

ValfrejyaDawn of Reckoning: You know me, I’m not a total sellout. This isn’t my usual cup of tea. I’m not the target audience for it. However, I did find this strange combination of Cradle of Filth and Eluveitie that Valfrejya offers us interesting. I enjoyed that it was more music-driven than theatre-driven, so in a way, it might be closer to Carach Angren. Valfrejya is a professional effort that honestly deserves a full review here at MER. If you love Folk/Goth or even Black Metal that doesn’t shriek “Satan!” every ten seconds, give it a try. I just love that it’s devoid of cheesiness—that’s a victory in this sub-genre. Click here!

Ghost of AgonyDemo: We don’t review demos every day. In fact, this is our first one ever (so, lucky you, Ghost of Agony). Hence, you can’t expect this to be measured with the same stick. Of course, the production is rough, and some ideas are uncooked, especially between track sections, but Ghost of Agony has talent—there’s no denying that. We’ll probably review its new album to get a better feel for its growth as a project. This is what True kvlt is about! Raw, unpolished stuff from the sewers of the internet. This demo is short and nasty in a way I’m sure will resonate with the “truest” segment of our readers (we love you basement dwellers!). Click here!

Crownless KingAbyss: Yay! Fun MeloDeath! Abyss by most measures is your typical MeloDeath EP that sounds great but that you’ve heard before. However, I’d like to highlight something different here. Crownless King has actual brutal vocals, which are rare in this style, and they use breakdowns in a way that doesn’t disgust me—they’re not abused. It’s solid and offers about 19 minutes of relentless hooks. The same as many before (and no, I’m not getting bribed—I wish…), the band is welcome to send us its album whenever it sees the light of day. Click here!

Another week, another group of artists served. It’s time for you to do the same and feed the consumerist machine by listening, commenting, buying, clicking, or performing any other behavior that gives us some kind of emotional profit. See you next week!
