Spectral Wound – Songs of Blood and Mire

There are few albums that have been relentlessly hyped on social media like Spectral Wound‘s Songs of Blood and Mire. Sure, I’ve liked what this band has released before, but the implicit pressure to check out this one has been a remarkable feat of marketing by whoever handles its promotions. Either way, you’re probably here after reading countless reviews that beat me to the punch, all of which have hyped you to death. Now you’re just wondering: Am I going to crush your expectations or make you even more ravenous for the release date? Watch and learn.

Songs of Blood and Mire is a Black Metal album. “Oh wow! Tell me something I don’t know, Catto!” Well, here’s the thing: we live in an era where most Black Metal is either mixed with something else or is just boooooring! Thankfully, Spectral Wound doesn’t know the meaning of boring and keeps us on the edge of our toilet seats for the entire duration of this creepy, mean, sharp, and emotionally rewarding album. Picture Mgła without the controversy and Rimfrost‘s sound quality, and you’ll have an idea of how deeply this album will pierce through your sad soul. Also, major props to the songwriting—it’s so clean and organized. Finally, someone who isn’t just tremolo picking like their guitar is a cheese grater.

But let’s get into the specifics! Not many bands can wrap up tracks the way Spectral Wound does. Its outros are spectacular—absolutely cathartic! If you listen to “Aristocratic Suicidal Black Metal” or “Less and Less Human, O Savage Spirit” (God bless them for those track titles), you’ll understand that after a barrage of exciting riffs, a song can still get even better by closing out as if it were the end of a set. Every track could easily finish off a live concert. And I love that—it shows a band that poured all its sweat, blood, and more bodily fluids into getting this thing out for us, the filthy commoners.

Honestly, I don’t have too many complaints. Unless you dislike the fact that the album is essentially the same from start to finish. There aren’t huge changes in style; all the songs are rather similar. But when each one sounds like Hellbutcher on steroids, you won’t mind them all being the same! Sure, the album can feel a bit long at times, but that’s just nitpicking because every section and transition is pure FIRE!

So yes, prepare your underwear, because if you love Black Metal, this album is going to make you mess them up. Spectral Wound is seriously emerging as a contender for the best Black Metal album of the year. While I haven’t been impressed by too many releases in this genre lately, it’s still getting tight at the top. I’m happy these guys have made my end-of-the-year list even harder to figure out. Yay…
