It’s been a decent year for Doom Metal! We’re in the midst of a revival, particularly of the more melancholic aspects of the sub-genre. Endonomos may not have been on our radar for very long, but if I had to describe the project, I’d call it a mix of Pallbearer, Fvneral Fvkk, and Swallow the Sun. I know what you’re thinking: “I hate soft Death/Doom”. But hear me out—Endonomos II – Enlightenment seems to offer something different that could melt the coldest heart (this me reaching new levels of corny). It’s time!
II is a lesson in blending styles. This album could have easily ended up feeling like it had no discernible personality. However, by drawing on the best of both the mellow and the heavy sides of Doom Metal, it manages to hold our attention. Even with its epically long tracks, II remains engaging, and I never found myself drifting off. Yes, there’s a lot of minimalism in II, especially in how it builds momentum, but it’s rewarding in ways that feel fresh. I enjoy a lot of Death/Doom, but for once, I’m pleased to say this band sounds original, and I can objectively say that without the usual bias (because I love misery-loaded music, and someone has to stop me!).
There are plenty of contemplative moments reminiscent of some deeply depressing Post-Metal band, but Endonomos doesn’t indulge in pretentiousness. It wields its primitive tools effectively. Besides, this album just sounds good overall—not perfect, but I’ll gladly welcome my sadness in such a nicely wrapped package. Perhaps the most interesting element for me is the vocal interplay between the soft and harsh styles. Instead of opting for a typical “beauty and the beast” dynamic, it leans into more of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde trope. The heavy moments in II matter because the tension has been built so well.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind. Most notably, this album requires some patience to be fully appreciated—not because of its length or sound, but due to its minimalist tendencies, which could throw some listeners off. Personally, I don’t mind it, but I can see how others might feel like it’s dragging things out. Still, I’d encourage you to have more patience than a three-year-old for once in your adult life (pointless request, but one can dream).
II brings us enjoyable wounds and a warmly hollowed feeling. It’s one of those rare albums that elitists might deem “proper Metal”, but that your noob friends could also enjoy. It’s a great introduction to Doom Metal, and even extreme music overall. I had no expectations when I put this on (okay, I lied, the artwork promised a lot!), but once again, I’ve been reminded that when you least expect it, the underground will come for your soul. So, enjoy, sad people!
