Ixone’s top 10 albums of 2024

Ixione

Having spent the majority of 2024 immersing myself in as much music as possible, I was surprised to find it challenging to choose my favorite albums of the year—not because there were too many, but because I hadn’t listened to as many as I had hoped. That said, I still managed to put together a list I’m proud of, even though I know there are countless great releases I’ve yet to explore. Without further ado, let’s dive into my top 10 Metal albums of 2024.

10. Bythos – Chthonic Gates Unveiled
If you’re as captivated by the macabre, occultism, and all things eerie as I am, there’s no reason not to enjoy this album. The oppressive atmosphere, melodic yet unsettling riffs, and a surprisingly commanding vocal performance will leave you in awe. The dynamism and artistry are beautifully intertwined, resulting in standout tracks like “Broken Binds of Eden“. This record evokes both fear and wonder in equal measure, making it an unforgettable experience.

9. Vindalf – Undying Order of the Black Flames
The best way to describe this album is… liminal. From its opening moments, it transports you to a realm dominated by cold and darkness, where unchained souls wander. Alternating between Dungeon Synth and Black Metal, the record effectively amplifies its haunting mood while offering an authentic old-school touch. It may appear straightforward at first glance, but it carries the raw essence of Black Metal in a way few others manage. Count Vindalf’s dedication is palpable in every aspect of the songwriting, solidifying his mastery of the genre.

8. Satanic Warmaster – Exultation of Cruelty
Returning to a rawer sound after the epic and majestic Aamogandr, Satanic Warmaster delivers another misanthropic opus. Strongly reminiscent of earlier efforts like Carelian Satanist Madness, this album proves the band’s enduring relevance, both musically and ideologically. In an era where many bands stray into unfamiliar territory—sometimes to their benefit, other times to their detriment—this record’s unflinching honesty is both refreshing and commendable.

7. Merrimack – Of Grace and Gravity
Similar in mood to Chthonic Gates Unveiled but leaning more toward the occult, this album is as captivating as the band’s live performance, which I was lucky enough to witness. Hypnotic yet powerful and daunting, listening to this record feels like staring into an immense black void. The guitar work and vocal delivery are nothing short of impressive, with tracks like Wounds That Heal standing as a testament to the band’s artistry.

6. Order of Nosferat – Towards the Nightrealm of Orlok
The second album by Order of Nosferat this year, it serves as a mystical counterpart to the darker The Absence of Grace, which I also greatly enjoyed. This album pairs perfectly with a quiet evening and a gothic novel. What drew me in most was the ambient synth work that frames the music, creating an ethereal listening experience.

5. Kohlrabenschwarz – Im finstren Tal
This album hit me much harder than I expected. From start to finish, it’s a raw expression of undiluted despair and suffering. Every element, from the drums to the vocals, exudes hopelessness, surpassing even the most memorable DSBM records I’ve heard in recent months. Its emotional weight ensures I’ll return to it again and again.

4. Whoredom Rife – Den Vrede Makt
It took me some time to fully appreciate this record, as it presents a slightly different sound from the band’s earlier works. However, there’s no denying its brilliance. The airy atmosphere and evocative vocal performance make it feel like the embodiment of a howling wind. Tracks like “The Beautiful End of All” rival Nid’s Where Shadows Dwell, which is no small feat.

3. Ungfell – De Ghörnt
Ungfell’s music often feels like the soundtrack to Goethe’s Faust, and this album is no exception. Its narrative quality, intricate guitar work, and evocative vocals, complete with occasional howls reminiscent of the band’s earlier releases, create a dark and immersive experience. It’s right up my alley, and I’m increasingly convinced this band can do no wrong.

2. Mork – Syv
Another band that seems incapable of missteps, Mork delivers an introspective and honest record with Syv. It’s an album I find myself returning to time and again. Capturing the band’s journey and musical maturity, it retains the catchy quality that makes Mork so irresistible, despite its serious tone and subject matter. A standout release from Norway, as expected.

1. Curse Upon a Prayer – The Worship: Ortoprax Satanism
This was my most highly anticipated album of 2024, and it surpassed even my lofty expectations. A maelstrom of darkness, power, and beauty, it contains everything I look for in an album: great songwriting, artistry, intensity, and dedication. Compared to other Finnish scene releases, it shines as a beacon of quality, further affirming its status as a masterpiece. Simply put, it’s bewitching.

And there you have it—my top 10 albums of 2024. While I’m confident in this list, it’s only a snapshot of an incredible year for Metal, with countless releases I’ve yet to explore. Here’s to 2025, which has a high bar to clear after this phenomenal year.
