Dolven – In My Grave…Silence

Metalcatto

It’s time for a break—and by that, I mean Metal isn’t always just harshness. It’s a state of mind. Dolven isn’t our usual cup of tea, but I’m kind of tired of people shouting and growling at me, so why not check out In My Grave…Silence, an album that has one of the most sorrowful clean vibes we’ve heard this year (It’s acoustic Doom!). Besides, I love that kind of medieval art. Don’t you?

Dolven is clearly inspired by Prog Rock and ends up doing something that reminds me of Damnation-era Opeth. In the sense that we’re dealing with themes and emotions deeply soaked in personal darkness. Yet, the result is this touching and painful procession of tracks that take their time to engulf us in sadness and longing. And still, you could put this on during a wedding and people wouldn’t probably run away.

My Grave…Silence is, without a doubt, a guitar-driven album. There are moments when not that much is going on, to be honest—but however little is happening, it remains emotionally compelling. It makes you feel that void in your soul no amount of junk food or energy drinks can fill. I do need to warn you: this isn’t a Metal album as we usually review at MER. If anything, I hesitate to even call it Rock, or Doom. Maybe it carries the spirit of both, but not quite the form.

Let’s face it, you’ve got to be in the right headspace to fully enjoy My Grave…Silence. It’s something Metalheads can appreciate, but it won’t be your main dish. My only real issue with the album was that the pacing sometimes dragged. Tracks stretching six to nine minutes are a gamble at this speed and mood. And while I believe many will find that perfectly fine, I was starting to run out of patience by the end. Maybe I was just longing for a bit of chaos.

Anyway, if you need a break from the relentless and sometimes pointless brain-bashing our favorite genre can dish out, Dolven offers a kind of respite you didn’t know you needed. Just remember—patience is a virtue, and you’ll need plenty of it to enjoy this album in its entirety. I used to be patient once. But if you can’t digest Doom pacing without distortion, maybe stick to the violent stuff, okay? Cheers!
