Metalcatto
As you might know by now, my relationship with Nu-Metal is more complex and conflictive than the Indian-Pakistani border. That said, ODC is a band I basically discovered by accident while doing mercenary work and decided to dig deeper, because not only Black Metal from your mom’s basement deserves chances. So what does Twisted Love have for us? Is it going to be a guilty pleasure or a “Korn concert” pleasure? Which one is the good one is up to you! Let’s do this!
I’ll do my best to put my French fanboy aside, since lately only the North can compete with the baguette country. Yes, this is fun, working-class Nu-Metal that doesn’t strike me as overly edgy. It’s more emotional than expected, but after all that I must say that Twisted Love fits its description well. It’s kind of nice, but at the same time it reminds you how broken you are — and that has to be relatable, right? I mean, we’re all broken people, otherwise why would you be reading about Metal like this instead of, I don’t know, enjoying the sun out there. Anyway, the album has commercial appeal but also glimpses of more Hardcore/Djent ideas that add interesting layers.
Of course, there are some predictable elements too. The crystal-clear production will generate mixed feelings for sure, and the vocals are Twisted Love’s highlight. They’re beautiful and catchy, but there’s also enough variation to keep things interesting. The riffing follows familiar territory, yet it ventures into heavier ground right before I get too comfortable. And I love Metal that makes me feel slightly uneasy. I know this is starting to sound too optimistic, so let’s bring it back down to Earth.

If you dislike eyeliner, you’re out of the band!
Twisted Love is, overall, an enjoyable ride if you’re into Nu-Metal. If you’re not, don’t bother. More specific points from me would be that the first half of the album feels stronger than the second, and I’m not sure how to feel about the closing track. It might just be too accessible for my snobbish prick taste. Then there’s the rapping: rare, but when it shows up, I don’t quite know how to feel about it either. It’s just a bit too radio-friendly for me! Yet, it’s still respectable, don’t worry!
Either way, if we ever get close to quality underground Nu-Metal, ODC is what you’re looking for. Sure, it’s another typical Avant-Garde/Prog French band at its core, but it delivers something that stands proudly next to other powerhouses in the niche. If you can digest the polished, pretty nature of what Twisted Love offers and want to indulge your more normal instincts, then I believe you should take a dive into this angsty sea.
