Wings of Steel – Winds of Time

Elyna Kahn

Winds of Time, the second album by American band Wings of Steel. Following its 2023 debut Gates of Twilight, the band founded by guitarist Parker Halub and vocalist Leo Unnermark delivers an album that combines a powerful and brilliant modern sound with music that honors the purest form of Heavy Metal, born in late 70s England.

To begin with, the mighty ballad “We Rise” — one of the album’s most memorable moments — stands as an anthem of war and resistance, summoning brave spirits, warriors, and rebels to rise against those who rule the world through guns, blood, fear, and death. Its intense lyrics evoke images of courage and unity, with new generations rising to illuminate the darkness of corruption, greed, and evil that infects the world. The glam and neo-classical influences are evident here: timeless choruses, nostalgic minor keys, and anthemic riffs and solos reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen’s mastery, while Leo Unnermark’s soaring vocals echo the grandeur of Stryper. The fusion of these elements creates an exhilarating and addictive experience, revealing new nuances with each listen.

“Burning Sands” unfolds as a true melodic rhapsody, reinforcing the lyrical narrative of humanity facing extinction under a burning sky. A striking aspect of the song is its cyclical message — that this “end of times” is not the first, but one in a recurring pattern where humankind fails to learn from its own mistakes. The famous quote by philosopher George Santayana rings true: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Musically, “Burning Sands” is dynamic and unpredictable, shifting in key, rhythm, and pace without ever sounding disjointed. The melodic line and Unnermark’s vocal delivery bring to mind Dream Theater, while the bridge channels both their intensity and the raw power of Slayer, combined with Yngwie Malmsteen’s technical flair. The result is a song that keeps listeners captivated, its diverse moments enhancing the lyrical depth and emotional impact.

Finally, the title track, “Winds of Time,” is an ambitious 10-minute epic. It takes aim at corruption, greed, and global manipulation, denouncing how a handful of powerful figures rule through fear, lies, and war. The lyrics warn of greed disguised as freedom, tyranny dressed as democracy, and slavery masked as security — yet also offer hope through resistance. United, the “Wind Riders” stand as the light in the darkness, the force that breaks the chains of illusion and oppression. Musically, the song moves fluidly between tempos, from slow to fast, weaving intricate rhythmic progressions and dynamic guitar work throughout. The overall tone recalls the spirit of Judas Priest and even touches of Mercyful Fate.

The middle section transitions into a melodic bridge — a moment of 80s-inspired balladry where Leo’s voice shines with raw emotion — before shifting into a beautiful NWOBHM-style instrumental passage. Parker Halub delivers not one, but two standout guitar solos: the first, a long and emotional centerpiece; the second, a shorter yet equally powerful finale.

Overall, Winds of Time is a coherent, balanced, and powerful experience where technical precision meets genuine passion. Each song’s instrumentation amplifies its message, and the album as a whole unfolds like an epic narrative of struggle, resilience, and triumph. Between war cries, melodic rhapsodies, and breathtaking ballads, Winds of Time invites repeated listens to uncover its many layers. So, Riders of the Wind, prepare to heed the call to resistance — an odyssey awaits, guided by the unyielding Wings of Steel.
