Did you think we were done reviewing new stuff this year? Well no! There are still many albums coming out left and right to the point I’m going to need to hire an assistant just to handle my mails (it’d make me feel so important!). Anyway Lust of Decay is an old-school Death Metal band, I know what you’re thinking, “another one? ok…”, but you see Entombed in Sewage is trying to give you an urban take on the old ways, and that’s not so common, right? Besides, this is practically a comeback album and I have a soft spot for those. Let’s begin.
Oh man, I love the distortion of that guitar tone. It’s so 90s, but it’s actually well produced. The savagery is reminiscent of traditional Cannibal Corpse or, if you want a more “modern” comparison (it’s a stretch, I know), Psycroptic. So expect fast, furious, and decadent horror that blasts your ears with no mercy, yet manages to stay engaging. I believe this is because the riff writing here is strong and the vocals support this attack perfectly. One can appreciate how there’s actual purpose behind all the Neanderthal noises here.
The bass! You can hear it loud and clear! It’s technical and gives that respite we all need when an album has no idea what taking a pause means. That’s alright, we didn’t come here to rest—we came to see if this thing is worth losing more sanity over. And overall, I’d say it is. There’s technicality in service of brutality, but Lust of Decay understands how to write songs. Many Death Metal bands just throw random obscure riffs after another, but here we have a balance that feels almost alien to the subgenre. That doesn’t mean it’s commercial, so chill, you elitists!

What’s not to like then? Well, my same two points again. First, the album doesn’t vary much from the chimp-with-a-machine-gun formula. It’s fun, but you know I always want something more. However, the voice tracks and the lyrics were so edgy that I was laughing here and there. Who mixes comments about butt stuff and then throws a wink at Star Wars? Lust of Decay has done the weirdest influence mash-up here. I don’t want to know how its members came up with these associations, but it certainly lightened the mood.
If you want thunderous Death Metal that is old school but produced in a cleaner, less murky way (less mud, more clarity), then Lust of Decay’s Entombed in Sewage is an album that could match your crazy. Or if you weren’t convinced by the new Depravity, maybe this is the assault you need to find inner peace. Now, I need to go back to chasing down the other MER writers that owe me articles. Wish me luck!
