Lord Of The Lost – Opvs Noir Vol. 2

Vicky

There are times when I’m starting to feel as if I were a dad wearing an AC/DC T-shirt and wondering why the kids nowadays are big fans of Sleep Token. It’s stupid, I know, but Lord Of The Lost (LOTL, not LOTR, that is) brought that feeling back. Second listen in, and I’m still pretty unsure as to why this band is so popular. Basically, we are dealing with a band that somehow managed to pick up the strangest elements from Mono Inc., Lacrimosa, Deine Lakaien, and Depeche Mode. Blending those with some Electronic-infused Dark/Goth Rock, you get LOTL.

But enough with the general knowledge, let’s get to talking about Opvs Noir Vol. 2. And, yes, it’s “opvs”, not “opus”, thanks a lot, Google for correcting me. This album almost made me fall asleep, so it’s safe for me to advise you all to not even try listening to it while tired, or else you’ll start snoring.

Unfortunately, the melodies don’t bring anything new to Lord Of The Lost’s ’80s Pop approach to Rock, but I can’t say it’s a bad thing. On the contrary, I found some songs like  “Walls Of Eden” and  “The Fall From Grace” to be very pleasant. And they are exactly my cup of tea (or, best said, they are the cup of tea of one of my favorite radio stations, M’era Luna FM. That’s something that I have been trying to popularize for about a year now). Some tracks feature very important guests, such as Moldovan singer Lena Scissorhands of Infected Rain, Finnish rapper Käärijä, English Synthpop project IAMX, and Anna Brunner, one of the founding members of Exit Eden and League of Distortion.

Lyric-wise, I must say that the song “One Of Us Will Be Next” is very good, with profound verses that manage to transcend the frivolous Pop-ish lyrics that are praised in Metal lately. Here are some lyrics from that track, just so you get what I mean: There goes all the sadness when you are here right here with me and I feel this gladness when you are near all is clear to me, but One of us will be next […] One of us will close their eyes, forever leave this world behind, one of us, one of us is next to die.

Even though a little bit more diversity would have certainly been appreciated, I must say that LOTL did exceed my expectations. It’s not the best album to wrap 2025 with, but it’s a pretty decent one. Of course, I can’t state that I will soon return to Opvs Noir Vol. 2, however I did manage to binge listen to  “One Of Us Will Be Next” about ten times only as I am writing these lines.

To sum everything up, I hope that you guys take my word for it and don’t try the album out while virtually one step into dream land. I am unsure whether I should rate this second chapter of Opvs Noir highly or very low, so I’ll just give it something in between. I might think of it differently upon more listens. Until then, fly high, my dear bats, and so long!
