Metalcatto
Mega Colossus clearly has a thing for size. This Heavy Metal act comes with artwork and an album title that couldn’t be further from each other in terms of what they convey. Everything was telling me this was going to be another okay album, but at the same time, this battered subgenre has had a surprisingly good year so far. Hence, why not dare to not be a total hater for once? Let’s try.
Yes! This is fun and energetic Heavy Metal that, despite feeling campy and optimistic at times, shows technical abilities and creative songwriting beyond the average of most bands in the niche. It’s the kind of Metal that could make posers and elitists agree on something. That would usually be catastrophic, but for Mega Colossus, it will hopefully translate into record sales. I know I like my artists starved and struggling—it builds character—but I make exceptions sometimes when the music deserves it.
The whole thing feels very pro-wrestling somehow. There are a lot of lyrics about fighting people, but delivered in a way that sounds not exactly real? Or at least heavily scripted? I’m sure I just offended someone with that observation, but what can I do if this thing makes me think of nerds in spandex pretending to fight instead of serial killers dressing up in human flesh suits? You’ve gotta love the sheer diversity of our extreme music scene. One day you’re reviewing gore-soaked Death Metal, the next you’re watching grown men sing about body slams.

This isn’t wrong, that’s the angle they sent.
Watch Out! doesn’t have one horrible flaw that ruins the experience. If anything, I just struggled with the lyrics at times. They made things way too campy for my personal taste. I understand the whole vibe is meant to be happy and uplifting, but it’s hard to swallow this much glitter without choking a little. Having said that, even if I’m not the biggest fan of retro Heavy Metal as a rule, the band offers something genuinely fresh here, as long as you’re willing to put up with all the cheese. Fortunately, the cheese factor stays mostly under control, never tipping into full Gloryhammer.
Mega Colossus is indeed a surprise. It helped that my expectations were sitting somewhere near zero, but Watch Out! convinced me with its sheer creativity and willingness to take risks. The album is full of enigmatic and almost contradictory aesthetic and narrative choices, yet it somehow makes everything shine together brighter than your future. If you’ve been sleeping on this band, consider this your wake-up call. The music is fun, the riffs are sharp, and the whole package works better than it has any right to.
