Théogonie is the debut album by the French Doom Metal duo Aetere. Its title refers to Theogony, the epic poem attributed to Hesiod, recounting the origins of the Greek gods. Rooted in a Greek term meaning “the birth of the gods,” it serves as one of the foundational texts of Greek cosmology.
The album opens with “Tenebrisme,” an instrumental piece rooted in the traditional features of doom metal. Built upon slow, heavy riffs and a dense atmosphere. Yet, despite its imposing presence, the track remains entirely instrumental, withholding the vocals. The term “Tenebrism” itself, refers to the dramatic contrast between light and darkness, a concept that immediately recalls the album’s cover art. Created by Mal De Siglos and accompanied by a layout design by Lucia Macip, the artwork depicts a winged female figure emerging in luminous white against a dark background. Her posture evokes a sense of sorrow or lamentation, the album’s themes.
The surprise arrives with the following track, “Galea.” While remaining firmly rooted in doom metal, the composition expands its sonic palette through a more atmospheric approach. The introduction of ethereal female vocals adds a new dimension to the album, softening the weight of the riffs and bringing a sense of melancholy and transcendence that enriches the album’s emotional depth. This interplay between crushing heaviness and spectral beauty continues throughout the following composition. But the atmosphere reaches a darker and more oppressive dimension with “Thanatos,” a track whose weight seems to embody the very concept behind its title. Named after the Greek personification of death, it deepens the album’s sense of mortality.
The closing track, “Eudaimonia,” distances itself from the album’s predominantly doom-oriented atmosphere and moves toward a more electronic and ritualistic soundscape. Its title refers to the ancient Greek concept of human flourishing—the pursuit of a good life and a lasting state of fulfillment rather than fleeting pleasure. Yet it leaves me with a lingering question: how can a human being truly achieve Eudaimonia in a world that so often marked by suffering and disillusionment?
