Fuming Mouth is quite a name for a band—I’ll give them that. However, that doesn’t mean things are going to convince me right away. Looking at Fuming Mouth‘s artwork, you might think this is either a hipster retro-Rock album or some Gothic melodramatic journey. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth, because this thing moves in areas and greys that don’t seem to fall into any obvious category. It’s interesting, I guess. Right?
Alright, I’d describe Bell as taking an old school Swedish Death Metal band and throwing it into a Hardcore breakdown parade. It’s strange because the album is deeply rancid and corrosive, yet it has these melancholic touches that elevate the whole thing from your average gig experience. If anything, the album gives an average impression at first, but slowly builds into something more meaningful and emotionally varied. So this is like Core stuff, but decent.
What got my attention the most was the album’s structure and pace. It’s well-balanced, moving from just breakdown after breakdown into a sadder and almost Proggy dimension. Here, Fuming Mouth shows it can do more than just smash our ears with no mercy—it can also smash our spirits. That’s kind of refreshing from a band of this style. Now, I’m going to talk about my issues with the album, so expect rage and fury.

Nah, it’s not that bad. But I did get a bit frustrated with Bell for different reasons than you might think. The album gets better as it reaches the end. It gains more dimension, more ideas, and that makes me wonder why the whole thing couldn’t be less Crawl and more Agriculture. This is an edgy suggestion, but I think the band is capable of reaching that kind of depth with its sound. Anyway, just a thought. If you want to throw down, we do it in person, okay?
Bell is weird—I don’t have doubts about that. But sometimes weird is good. It mixes things I’m usually suspicious about, but the secret lies in subtlety, which is ironic considering how heavy this thing gets at times. Yet the veteran Metalhead will notice something is going on here better than usual. So if you love a dense sound but also emotional layers in your simplicity, this album can give you something you desire. Or not. You’ll have to decide this time.
