Emptiness – Nowhere Speaks

Metalcatto

Rarely has a band had a more fitting name than Emptiness. It’s hard to define whatever is going on in Nowhere Speaks, but what I can tell you is that “depressive” is the lightest way to put it. Is this Industrial Goth? Like, I’m edgy but live in an Industrial wasteland? Hard to tell. But if you’re into strange imagery, you should keep reading, because this is only going to get weirder as we descend into absolute despair. That sounded awesome, right?

Nowhere Speaks is like chasing shadows in the dark. Wait, isn’t that dumb because without light there are no shadows? Exactly. It’s an utterly bleak and decadent journey that feels like the soundtrack to a Soviet city in the butt of Siberia—you know, where they ran nuclear tests without telling the local population. Well, that’s the vibe Emptiness is going for. So don’t expect fancy tricks or technical complexity. The album just wants to throw you against a great wall over and over again, until you’re numb enough to appreciate the view.

Even if it’s a bit of a stretch, this album has that The Body spirit. As in, even when you don’t know what’s going on, you still feel like garbage. The art here is in the atmosphere—dense and impenetrable. The vocals help a lot in making this whole thing heavier than it actually is. They give it that extra dark touch. As you’ve noticed, this review is more abstract than usual, because Nowhere Speaks isn’t about individual events. It’s a whole that doesn’t have stronger or weaker elements—just a sustained state of decay.

Yet, it’s going to take a special kind of fan—or a specific mindset—to not absolutely detest Nowhere Speaks. Not because it’s mediocre, but because the music evokes such negative emotions that most people won’t find it enjoyable. It’s also not the most dynamic effort. It stays in these small, lo-fi places, torturing you for its entire duration. It could use more variation, though I admit it would be hard to achieve with this style. The monotony is intentional, but that doesn’t make it any easier to sit through.

So if you’re looking for something that will make you feel empty—truly, deeply empty—then Emptiness has delivered exactly what the name promises. Nowhere Speaks isn’t an album you enjoy. It’s an album you endure. And sometimes, that’s exactly the point. It’s not for everyone. But for those who get it, it’s a reminder that darkness doesn’t need complexity to be effective. Sometimes all it needs is persistence. And Emptiness is nothing if not persistent. Just don’t expect to feel better afterward. That’s not what this is for.
