Complexant – Apex

I know what you’re asking, but you’re too afraid to make a fool of yourself, so I’ll make it for you: Is Complexant complex? Is Apex actually peak, or as many times before, are these just meaningless words? I had no expectations of anything but getting bashed with violent riffs and endless blasting. But perhaps I was wrong. Perhaps I’m about to be surprised and get destroyed in new, beautiful ways. Let’s see.

Okay, so this album is weird. No, it’s not Avant-Garde at all—there’s no madness in the sense of just putting the ten most random riffs you can find together. It’s a stylistic kind of weird. At times, Apex hits you with huge, thick riffs and then jumps into a chorus straight out of a Metalcore track. It’s almost corny, but the atmosphere stays as hostile as it should be. The consistency in the style gets stretched to its limit, but it never breaks to a point that made me annoyed. Though it did make me puzzled. More on that later.

I don’t think there’s one track that stands out here, or even a band member, because this is clearly a team effort. The songwriting, whether you love it or hate it, is something that stands out to anyone who’s been in the game for longer than a month. I know we just reviewed Vulgar Mephitis, but there’s a lot of that here—of course with these friendlier moments, as in they want to shoot your brains out instead of just chop you into pieces. So don’t panic. You’ll get your pain.

It’s hard to digest some of these changes. Maybe if the choruses were a bit harsher, I’d feel less dissonance. Also, couldn’t we just integrate the last tracks into one? It’s particular, to say the least. Some of those pace decisions are enigmatic. So it’s not huge issues, but they are prominent, and they get in my way of enjoying this thing. So am I angry? Nah. Am I confused? Maybe in some way.

Complexant is curious for sure. It’ll surprise more than one Metalhead. However, I suspect this is going to be a polarizing release. You might enjoy their bold decisions, but you could also be alienated. Both are possible. I highly doubt you’ll be able to remain indifferent, though. So give it a try—you’ve got nothing to lose. Your hearing is half gone anway.
