Back when I was younger, there was this saying that went something like this: there are things out there that you won’t understand, so try to stay away from them. Had that honestly been the case, I probably shouldn’t/wouldn’t have listened to this album, that I can barely pronounce without summoning evil spirits, let alone review without looking astonished behind my laptop (since you cannot see me, take my word for it, would you?).
Since I am a little late with this review, I will spare you anymore of the witty things I could say about Syvyyden portit on saatava auki (which, by the way, means The Gates of the Deep Must Be Opened, according to Google Translate), and just get to the point.
Se, Josta Ei Puhuta (also known in English as That Which Is Not Spoken) delivers some pretty solid meloblack/death metal, with shrieks that will help you take the paint off your walls – actually, the walls from your paint – with their intensity, and decent to very good riffs. Kudos to the drummer and to the rhythm guitarist, to say the least. Another interesting component is the vocals, alternating between growls/shrieks and spoken passages, the latter being present in virtually any song, except for the intro of the album. Also, the guitar solo on the title song is absolutely to die for. Little piece of advice for Se, Josta Ei Puhuta: make more tracks like “Syvyyden portit on saatava auki”, that is so dynamic that it has the chance to propel you farther than any “Varis” ever could.
In terms of lyrics, they are in Finnish, and the ones I found, belonging to the song „Kuolemaa ei ole” („There Is No Death”, that is), are profound and deal with the very important theological and philosophical concept of living. What stood out to me, personally, was the use of quotes from the book Valoa kohti (Towards the Light), by Finnish philosopher Pekka Ervast. In fact, I liked them so much I want you to be able to read a part of them, translated: Älkäämme kadottako uskoamme, tarmoamme, rohkeuttamme. On toisia, jotka ennen sen tien ovat kulkeneet. He tuntevat sen kärsimyksen, he tietävät sen tuskan. He odottavat meidän tuloamme (Let us not lose our faith, our energy, our courage.There are others who have walked that path before. They feel its suffering; they know its pain. They await our arrival.).
To conclude, whether I did in fact convince you to listen to this somewhat of a meisterwerk of Finnish band Se, Josta Ei Puhuta or not, you might want to give it a listen either way, just to see what I was talking about. Your stream could end up saving the band from starvation and who knows, maybe you’ll like it. What if this group ends up being your favorite of all time and you came across it thanks to me?
