I know that yesterday I said I didn’t want to review more old school Death Metal, but what can one do with limited time and so many promos? We don’t know where to start. I had no idea what Revel in Flesh had to offer, or if Flesh For The Kult Of Death would break the mold that so many bands have shaped before. But what I know is that this review needs to be out fast. So here we are, diving into another cavernous release that promises to either crush or comfort.
If you recorded Death Metal in an echo chamber, with rancid instruments that still have a bit of puke in them from last night’s gig, then you know what Flesh For The Kult Of Death is going to sound like. It’s all that cavernous sound that at this point either you love or totally hate more than your in-laws hate you. So yes, meat and potatoes bashing. Just like the doctor recommended. The riffs are thick, the tempos are plodding, and the whole thing feels like being buried alive in a damp tomb. It’s not pretty, but it’s honest.
I’ll keep talking about the production and the vocals because those are the two things that stand out. The first has a more idiosyncratic approach that makes the album a bit memorable. The second has that evil and disgust you want from this kind of music. Yet nothing here puts you in an uncomfortable spot where there’ll be something hard to digest. If anything, the consistency here reaches Demonic levels, which reminds me—yes, this album sounds a lot like a Swedish old school record. It has that chainsaw sound that cuts through the mix like a blade through flesh.
I know I love my Swedish chainsaw, but I’m also freaking burnt out by it. It’s become less common, but it’s still part of a Death Metal nostalgia pack. It’s all well executed, but full of familiar places that you’ve become used to. So it’ll feel like another morning sandwich for you. You do love breakfast, but do you remember every moment of it? I thought so, and there’s no shame in that. The album is reliable, but it doesn’t push any boundaries. It stays firmly within the lines, which is both its strength and its limitation.
If you’re looking for a mix of old school styles, Revel in Flesh has what you need. It has all that decadence and decay you long for. Sure, I’m left wanting more on my dish, but I don’t hate getting some scrambled eggs. Time to stop with all these food analogies. You know what to do. Go and check this safe move. Having said all this, I’m hungry now.
