When you hear the name Green Lung, you either think of the Amazon rainforest or a horrible type of cancer. However, there’s a retro-Heavy and Sludge Metal band out there that has something to show us today. Yet, Necropolitan sounded exactly as I expected. You’ll have to stick around to know if that means good or bad. I’ll keep writing after all.
Hippie Prog. No, just kidding. Necropolitan is more than just nostalgia. It has solid songwriting that keeps you entertained for all its length. Aside from the intro, there’s not much filler here. The tracks use their time wisely and don’t abuse our patience. We get those hooks right in the liver, as it’s supposed to be. It’s not Beardfish or Khemmis, but it certainly has a touch of that weed vibe. The riffs are thick, the grooves are infectious, and the whole thing feels like a late-night drive through a foggy forest.
Don’t despair if you hate pothead Metal. This is far more psychedelic and compact. I know I said there’s some creativity here, but the part that I enjoyed the most were the guitar solos. You see, usually these retro albums just fart some bluesy solo that makes you think of Jimi Hendrix if he were right-handed. Fortunately, there’s more quality here. The solos are melodic, well-placed, and add a layer of sophistication that elevates the album beyond simple nostalgia. So what did I dislike?
As you might know, I’m not the biggest fan of trippy stuff. As in music that makes my synesthetic brain see purple. Also, I end up feeling that the band could have slightly higher technical ambitions. It might ruin the sound—great tip, I know—but it would give us something truly unexpected. However, if you love this quirky and fun retro vibe, you should buy Necropolitan right away. The album stays firmly within its comfort zone, but it does so with confidence and charm.
Alright, I didn’t expect to hate Necropolitan, but I didn’t expect to like it either. Hence, it was nice to listen to this and have some fun with an album that feels warmer than most things reviewed at MER. Fair, we mostly review music from the deepest pits in hell, but still—we all need to breathe at times. And Green Lung gave me that.
