When I heard the name Fog Wall, I honestly thought this would be some kind of Gothic journey full of synths and cute flowery riffs. Having said that, I’ve never been so wrong, because Gloomweaver is just absolutely punishing. I wasn’t ready for the intensity here, but that’s what we’re here for—to be totally surprised and destroyed by the horrors and depths of extreme Metal!
Jeez. This was brutal, inhumane, ultra heavy—I just ran out of adjectives to describe how heinous this is. Perhaps if you take the heaviness of Nightmarer and some of the technicality of Evilyn, then you know exactly what you’re getting into. Those riffs hit you so hard that your ears blow up. The only moments that are less insane are the ones that sound like Black Metal tremolo picking, but it’s brief, and it all goes back to hell right away. The pace is relentless, the breakdowns are crushing, and the whole thing feels like being caught in a landslide of distortion.
It might not be obvious what stands out here, because Gloomweaver really stands out everywhere, but just the production of this thing is hysterical. The music is simply louder than a jet taking off. Yet, if you think the bass gets forgotten, you’d be terribly wrong, because there are true moments of ridiculous technicality here. Even the constant breakdowns lead somewhere. It’s a literal wall of sound—dense, oppressive, and unyielding. The guitars are down-tuned to oblivion, the drums are almost clicky, but for once that’s ok!
That could be what scares you away from this massacre. The heaviness never stops. Never gives you a moment to put your life together. It just rains down to a point that might leave you numb. I was for sure by the last track. Even if everything was still impressive, I don’t expect everyone to love Gloomweaver, but at least you can respect it. If anything, the tracks feel long because so much mayhem is happening at once, so you’ll probably need a break. The album doesn’t let up, and that’s both its strength and its limitation.
It’s a nice surprise when a band just beats the snot out of you like this. Fog Wall should definitely get all the attention it’s getting. Imagine a Deathcore band that’s actually good—that’s what we have here. Good to see it wasn’t impossible. It only needed musicianship and malice. Let’s hope you’re ready for it. Because if you’re not, this album will eat you alive.
