It’s not often that I review a split. In a way, I’ve never understood their purpose aside from splitting the bill. Anyway, Replicant cemented itself as one of the best Death Metal bands out there with Infinite Mortality, and Elitist I just got to know, so it’s been an interesting contrast, to say the least, with Indomitable Hostility. Okay, let’s cut to the chase—is this split worth the little cash you have left?
This was wild. On one hand, Replicant hits us with all that disgusting and complicated Disso-Death, but also dares to do a few things differently. Whereas Elitist delivers pure speed and aggression that feels like an old Black Metal band that can actually play its instruments. They make a strange mix, but you won’t get bored at all. There’s simply too much chaos in your ears for that. The riffs are relentless, the tempo shifts are unpredictable, and the whole thing feels like being caught in a maelstrom of distortion.
Sure, these guys can play hostile and bizarre, but that’s not the most interesting thing here. Replicant added a second vocalist, and the contrast she creates gives all that brutality more depth. But before things get out of hand, Elitist‘s less dissonant approach brings it back home for those of you who want to headbang at a more stable pace. Having said all that, you’re still getting obliterated. The production is raw and punishing, the performances are tight, and the whole thing feels like a controlled explosion.
I’m just left rather hungry. I’d like to get a new album from each of these bands. I guess that’s the point here, but still, I can’t avoid thinking these works are incomplete. Another inevitable part of doing a split. However, I appreciate and respect that the bands avoided making some super short EP. This is definitely a more enticing format. It gives you enough to sink your teeth into without overstaying its welcome.
I had high expectations, but overall Replicant and Elitist delivered a quick and inhumane dose of extremity that those of you who are curious by nature could enjoy. Your cat will still want to end its life if you put this on loud, but maybe that’s your cheap euthanasia plan. Either way, these guys deserve some cash, so don’t spend it all on cassettes this month. Leave something for a split. It’s worth it.
