I’m usually not reviewing old school bands like Cardinals Folly, but when you show up with an album named Let The Posers Fall!, the snob side of me gets curious and wonders if the music really honors the cocky attitude. It’s Finnish Doom, so it should deliver something I hoped for, but enough going around—let’s find out if the album honors the country’s long tradition in the genre.
There’s some humor here in a way. The vibe, the voice-overs. It might be the intention, but that’s what we get in the end: a nostalgia trip that feels, despite the seriousness of its riffs, like it still has a laugh at the genre and doesn’t pretend to be fancy music. You could find it in any random pub in Kajaani. That’s the feel I get here, at least. The riffs are thick, the grooves are slow. The album feels like a beer-soaked evening with friends in the middle of the woods.
Probably the guitar work is the catchiest element here. The vocals are definitely on the dramatic side of the spectrum, to the point where it almost ends up being a Goth rendition of a highway Metal band. It’s interesting, and it made me chuckle more than once. So there’s merit in that. How about the things I dislike? I’m sorry to say that there are more than a few.
I might sympathize a lot with the band’s vibe, but I just don’t find most of what’s going on super memorable. Nothing is poorly written or mediocrely produced, but I can’t recall much of what the songs had going for them. It’s all too safe for my taste, and I would have appreciated a bit more transgression to the rules of Doom Metal. For once, I have to be severe, but well, you guys sort of pay me to be honest. The album sticks to classic tricks, and while that’s not a crime, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression either.
Cardinals Folly might not have done much for me, but maybe it will for you. Maybe it was my high expectations given the band’s background, but in the end, I’ll pick being honest over getting more sponsors—see what I do for you? Let The Posers Fall! is legit, but unless you’re in love with retro-Doom, you should leave this one pass.
