I know I’m ridiculously early with this review, but when a promo says Haxprocess is a mix of Opeth (the good albums) and Blood Incantation, that made me excited. Either because it was going to be awesome or utterly disappointing. Both would be interesting. So does Endlessly Flowing Cascades of Grief—this isn’t a band name, but a sentence—deliver? Let’s find out.
We have had things like this before, but rarely with this particular pace. Flowing has such a confusing structure. You get these tracks that do a great sadist rendition in a bit more than five minutes, and then you get a twenty-one-minute epic finale, where Haxprocess shows that it can do more than just making technical riffs. They can put it all together without minding taking huge amounts of risk. It’s a bold move, and for the most part, it pays off.
Imagine Blood Incantation without all the psychedelic stuff. Just the pure Prog Death. That can be the best album ever, or it can totally lose you. The album has no interludes or breaks—you get all that intensity from beginning to end. As it should be. So I have to work a bit to find what to nag Flowing about, but it’s never impossible. The pace can break your neck. You’re just not primed for such a different ending. The songwriting is great, but I’m left hoping for something less old school Death Metal and more modern—maybe even sentimental. As it is, it’s just unrelenting aggression. I’m missing other emotions. A little more emotional range would have made this a true masterpiece.
This is a cool album out of basically nowhere. The name might be something I don’t want to ever write down again, but the music I can have here and there. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you get a super crush on this thing and bring it back at the end of the year. In my case, I might need a bit more time. Ah, right—you have to wait a ton yet for it, hehe. So if you’re in the mood for something that challenges your patience and rewards your attention, keep an eye out for this one.
