Metalcatto
If there’s one trick pony out there, it’s Amon Amarth. Despite this obvious fact, the band has been ridiculously successful, taking Viking sagas to places nobody ever imagined they’d reach—Wisconsin. However, ever since Jomsviking, I’d say the band has suffered a creative drought, which is why I’m approaching The Allfather Awakens with extreme caution. I have no hope this is going to be With Oden on Our Side or Deceiver of the Gods, but okay.
It doesn’t suck. Allfather is okay, people. The album has all that an Amon Amarth album needs: thunderous riffs, melancholic melodies, primal yet clear vocals. It’s like we’re back in 2005 again. The band feels inspired again. We get an album that’s actually fun, but not to the point where it’s ridiculous, which is a relief after The Great Heathen Army. The production is solid and the performances are tight. It sounds a bit fresh for once
It’s nice to see that Hegg can still deliver clinic-level growling work. You can always understand what this man is shouting about. The songwriting is probably the best part of the album, since it takes a lot from the old days. Even if you’ve been here many times and most of the tracks are almost interchangeable with each other. Okay, time to nag.
Even if it feels like Amon Amarth got rid of that board-game-loser vibe—like Scandinavia weeb vibes—Allfather is still another of the many albums in this rich catalog. Its originality is pretty limited, and though I had a ton of fun, there’s not a track that stays in my mind for long, aside from the acoustic one because it was so out of pocket, but not terrible. This isn’t Twilight of the Thunder God, sadly. It’s not a return to their peak, but it’s a step in the right direction.
