Void Sector Zero – Dead Space Enigma

Metalcatto

It’s time for some SHRED!!! Void Sector Zero is nothing but a supergroup, featuring members of Necrophagist, Obscura, and Revocation and many more bands. There’s no way this album is going to be a walk in the park. Chances are, you’ll never be able to learn these songs, let alone sing along. The real question is whether these guys are going to blow us out of the water or completely bore us with an excessive onslaught of notes on Dead Space Enigma. I’m nervous!

Imagine if Kreator were a ridiculously technical band. That’s what’s fresh about Dead Space Enigma. It’s more than Tech Thrash or Tech Death. It tries to find a middle ground that’s complex without requiring a PhD in music to appreciate, unlike, let’s say, Alkaloid. You’ll get all the flashy parts, but there’s also a decent sense of groove. Oh, and of course, this album is about space and quantum physics. It adds an extra layer of nerdiness that could offend an actual physicist.

Obviously, the performances are out of this world. I can’t complain much when it comes to musicianship. Even the freaking bass is loud and fancy! Perhaps the most interesting thing is that, at times, I felt like I was listening to an instrumental album. The vocals are practically decoration, and they’re probably the most straightforward element on Dead Space Enigma. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because something has to remind us that these guys aren’t machines. Now, here’s what I dislike!

It’s hard to criticize a band that plays so flawlessly and writes such ridiculously complex music. There’s the musician in me, who has absolutely nothing to whine about, and then there’s the Metalhead in me, who’s missing something that sticks around in my head long after the album ends. At times, I would’ve enjoyed a little more emotional variation, some ups and downs instead of this relentless display of technical stability. Even the most impressive guitar gymnastics can start to feel like watching someone win an Olympic medal in a sport you don’t particularly care about.

So, this is a legitimate supergroup, and they shred their way into some interesting territory. Void Sector Zero takes a thrashier approach, which gives Dead Space Enigma a bit more punch than your average Tech Death exercise. It might not be the biggest stylistic surprise from these virtuosos, but only a handful of musicians can perform at this level. I have to give credit where it’s due: most of the wanking here is the right kind of wanking.
