Usually, I wouldn’t even bother to check a remake or remaster, but Saor is a band I’ve long wondered about: what could they sound like if they had more budget? Not many projects get enough cash to do it all over again, which is why I wanted to check if Caledonia revived the classics or just butchered them harder than Disney. I’m careful today, but a man can dream.
It’s been a good week for releases and the Catto life, which is why we need to end it with something urban, decadent, and utterly depressing. Too much joy can spoil the soul, and Beneath a Steel Sky‘s album Cleave delivers the perfect antidote. This release promises to delve into your most painful memories and craft art from them. With my love for crushing Post-Metal—almost rivaling my affection for Finnish Death/Doom—let’s dive into this urban wasteland.
Well, I guess this is what the people voted for on Instagram, and since I still believe in democracy (when it suits me), here we are. Honestly, I’ve been procrastinating on this review for a while. I’ve been into Saor since Aura, back when the project was limited by the constraints of being a one-person endeavor. Since then, I’ve enjoyed everything it’s released, even though Origins felt a bit predictable to me. That said, I’m willing to believe that Amidst the Ruins is exactly what Saor needs to continue its evolution. How much more Scottish can these guys get? Like, haggis Scottish? It seems impossible!
