When you spend a lot of time reviewing albums, it’s easy to overlook the more modest releases that can still offer quality despite arriving with less fanfare. That’s why I’ve combined two completely different projects in one article, to provide some good or bad publicity to these EPs that reached us without much pretense (see kids? A bit of humility can take you far in life). So, let the mayhem begin!

Legionary – Prison Realm: Did you enjoy the last album Sylosis put out? Chances are you didn’t. I’m part of the select group who appreciated that blend of aggression and commercial appeal. Not all Metal has to sound like broken toilets flushing. Prison Realm is a great example—it’s light, aggressive, and incredibly catchy. It draws influences from Sylosis, The Black Dahlia Murder, and At the Gates, but with a more accessible tone that never falls into cringe. It knows its strength lies in its brevity. Legionary offers us something fun, but not silly or trivial. So, if you’re not an uptight elitist, give it a go!

Sons of Gulliver – S/T: The times of Rock ‘n’ Roll are long gone, but that doesn’t mean the younger generations can’t get a taste of it. Enter S/T (self-titled), an EP clearly trying to capture the unpolished and psychedelic nature of earlier times. However, it comes with a twist! This is also a Stoner/Doom EP that, although it might sometimes feel like it should belong to our True Kvlt section, has a charm in its production that earned it a spot in the main section. This is the kind of Metal that makes you headbang and smoke forbidden substances. Have you heard it all before? Probably, but you can hear it again, right?

There you go! Two projects so different that you really have to be a Metal master to jump from one to the other. You could even deserve to work with us. Maybe even start by mopping floors at MER industries, working your way up to the guy who carries my golf clubs around, or the guy who keeps my Lamborghini shiny so it reflects my image when I leave our offices. But I digress—go give these two some love, because that’s what we can actually give in this life that matters (oh, you didn’t see that one coming, right?).
