In true Sleep fashion, I was too confused to review this on time. The band comes out of nowhere every twenty years, basically. I understand these guys are pioneers of weed Metal and that The Sciences was probably the comeback of that year, but that doesn’t mean I’m not rather skeptical about Hempispheres. Though maybe I’m just not high enough.

It always makes me happy when a band is back. As in, MER lived long enough to review it again. So I’m happy to live to see another Stoned Jesus album—not because I’m a diehard fan, but because the name amuses me every time I see it. My real question for Songs to Moon is: would it bring change, or is it going to be consistent? And if it’s the second one, would it be any fun?

Stoned Jesus is probably one of the best band names I’ve heard in a while. You immediately know this is a Stoner/Sludge Metal band, right? True, but that’s the thing about Songs to Sun — it promises to be so much more than another album to roll joints to. There’s a moment of maturity many bands in this niche eventually reach, and I’m wondering if this is that album in its catalogue. The one where it convinces not just the diehards, but everyone else too, that you can be psychedelic and heartbreaking at the same time. Enough waiting, let’s dive in!
When you spend a lot of time reviewing albums, it’s easy to overlook the more modest releases that can still offer quality despite arriving with less fanfare. That’s why I’ve combined two completely different projects in one article, to provide some good or bad publicity to these EPs that reached us without much pretense (see kids? A bit of humility can take you far in life). So, let the mayhem begin!
The sun shines this morning; the warmth hits me and makes me feel like hope is within reach. There’s a brief moment of joy in this peace and calm. Wouldn’t it be awesome to ruin all that with some Stoner/Doom Metal straight from Albany, NY? You’re right, that’s exactly what we should do, which is why today, we’re going to talk about Carnwennan – Lotus, an album that promises to burn down any feelings of happiness you were planning to have today. I know you like pain, so let’s just stop the nonsense and judge if this debut (yes, another one) breaks us or not.
