Stoned Jesus is probably one of the best band names I’ve heard in a while. You immediately know this is a Stoner/Sludge Metal band, right? True, but that’s the thing about Songs to Sun — it promises to be so much more than another album to roll joints to. There’s a moment of maturity many bands in this niche eventually reach, and I’m wondering if this is that album in its catalogue. The one where it convinces not just the diehards, but everyone else too, that you can be psychedelic and heartbreaking at the same time. Enough waiting, let’s dive in!
Songs to Sun is more than just dense, saturated distortion. In fact, there’s not much of that here. Instead, we get clean yet effective songwriting that, while always centered on the riffs, creates moments that can only be described as Progressive. This is most evident in the longer tracks at the beginning and end, while the middle leans more accessible. That particular combination creates an experience you can enjoy fully conscious. It’s not like Sleep, where the more substances you consume the better it gets. You can enjoy Stoned Jesus sober, which is a win in my book!
Despite me enjoying the vocals and even the lyrics (yes, it’s happening more often lately, I’m getting soft!), it’s the production and instrumental sections that really stand out. Everything sounds polished but organic, and the guitar work reminds me a lot of a slower version of Elder. That’s definitely a compliment, since few bands do Post/Prog better than those guys. I went into Songs to Sun expecting to be amused, not impressed, but I was left wanting to return because of how authentic and natural the album feels. Now, you know what’s coming, get ready!

This isn’t a harsh album — it’s not violent or crushing. Instead, it’s sorrowful in a way I believe most Metalheads aren’t used to, which might make you feel more out of place than a worm in a birdcage. There’s also a short interlude track, and those usually aren’t my thing since they tend to break the pace. Finally, the finale is impressive in terms of how much it achieves with so little, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it could’ve been slightly more bombastic to give us a psychedelic send-off. Instead, we’re left with self-loathing. I guess that’s fine too!
Stoned Jesus has crafted something personal, dynamic, and full of details that will keep long-time fans engaged while probably converting a few sceptics. I’m definitely a believer now. If you’re willing to put aside wanky technicality for a few minutes and focus on raw emotion (kind of what YOB does too), then you’ll be able to fully appreciate this melancholic trip. So… when do we get a band named Buddha on coke? I can’t wait!
