We’ve got an OG of the ultra-underground section today. It’s Die Entweihung with a new album named World Wide Terror. That’s not news here—the project releases something basically every year, so I know what to expect: old school Amorphis worship with a touch of Folk Metal that can remind you a tiny bit of Orphaned Land, except the production is rawer than a sushi roll. But is it as tasty? Let’s see.
This is probably the most elaborate work I’ve seen from this band. The songs are full of angry riffs, detailed arrangements, fun twists, and constant vocal changes. So it’s not boring for sure. It offers enough entertainment for the hungry masses. The tracks are on the longer side, but they don’t speculate too much. We also get lots of instrumental passages that are quite interesting and give the music room to breathe. The songwriting feels more confident this time around, with clearer structures and better transitions.
The album is far more vocally driven than previous entries from the band. They get harsh, clean, or something in the middle very quickly. The truth is Die Entweihung could be more than just a curiosity if a few things were addressed—according to my snobbish taste, of course. Having said that, things feel less political this time. I mean, it still sounds like torture, but nobody is actually getting tortured. The themes are more abstract, more atmospheric, which suits the music better.
We need to talk about the big issue here: the production. I have the impression that Die Entweihung likes to sound this way—with guitar tones as rancid as bad breath. It gives it that kvlt touch, but I can’t stop thinking about what all these cool ideas, twists, and trust would feel like if we had a standard level of production. Any criticism about the songwriting is on hold because the production doesn’t let me properly judge the intentions of the work. Well, now you know.
Alright, if you’re into Folk and old MeloDeath but want it to sound like it came out of a can, then this is definitely for you. It has a lot of meat for the money, even if it’s all rotten to the core. You know what this section is about, so if you were expecting Dan Swanö levels of production, you ended up in the wrong neighborhood. This sounds more like Satyricon production levels. Deal with it. It’s raw, it’s ugly, and it’s proud of it. Not for everyone, but for those who dig it, there’s plenty to chew on. Just don’t expect a clean plate.
