I hope you had a good day, kids, because now we’re going to get smacked by a rainfall of technicality. I know old school Death Metal never dies, but you know what we don’t get often? Old school Tech Death—which is why Miscreance‘s Reminiscence made me nostalgic. So maybe I’ll feel a bit more merciful and give them a decent score. Or not. Let’s see. The album promises a journey back to a time when technicality didn’t mean sterile production, and I’m curious to see if it delivers on that promise.
I know this thing is supposed to be serious, but I can’t avoid comparing Reminiscence to Atheist and Sadist. That’s nothing but a compliment. It has that quirky nature that makes the heaviness and technicality all the more digestible. Hence, the album goes in and out before you can recall your breakfast. Speed, precision, but lots of dirt. Not much new, but also not something I get to experience often. The riffs are angular, the rhythms shift unexpectedly, and the whole thing feels like a controlled explosion that somehow stays on track.
It’s hard to get that 90s sound so well, and Miscreance manages to do it. The album is rather consistent, and though it has a few sections where you get to breathe, the maze keeps getting bigger as we keep going. As you’d expect, the guitar work and the drums are the biggest asset the band has to fry your brains out of this world. The production is raw enough to feel authentic but clear enough to appreciate every note.
More Prog. The album could definitely benefit from nuance. It’s nice to get our brains bashed and all that, but I’d like more ups and downs. As it is, it reminds me a lot of the latest Sadist album, which I love, but still—you don’t only want to be compared, right? The album stays in a fairly narrow approach, and while that’s part of its charm, it also limits its ability to surprise. A few more shifts in tempo or mood could elevate it from good to great. Anyway, you can dig quirky Tech Death/Thrash if you have a sense of humor. If you’re reading this, you probably do.
My nostalgia is satisfied. It didn’t ask for much, but Reminiscence still delivered what I expected. Tech Thrash that reminds me why, despite how old the subgenre is, it can still offer a lot of fun and creativity. I know I’ve been saying this sound is old, but the way Miscreance uses it is more interesting than many bands that try to do Death/Thrash from a safer place. I’d rather review five albums like this than another old school Death Metal crusty borefest. So if you’re in the mood for something that honors the past without being trapped by it, give Reminiscence a spin.
