You might wonder why I’m even bothering to review Cursum Perficio so late. Well, the reason I’m late is because I’m kind of an Anthrax hater. I don’t see the big deal about the band. Testament is much better. Anyway, that doesn’t mean I won’t make an effort to be fair. After all, their last album got good reviews—I couldn’t even finish it, though. Let’s go.
Okay, okay, Cursum Perficio has had some love in its creation. I’ll admit that. The songwriting is pretty engaging. And though I wouldn’t qualify this as modern Thrash, it has all the parts for a senior album. As in, it’s old school but not nostalgic. Anthrax is full of ideas, which is honestly impressive from a band so old that there was still a Soviet Union back then. The band still has something to prove—even after all these decades.
It’d be easy to highlight the guitar work, especially the solos, or the catchy vocals, but in the end, Cursum Perficio is a success in terms of enticement. You won’t get bored. The tracks are all different enough to keep the fun going all the way. It’s also surprisingly accessible, so you could even show this to your normal friends, if you have any. How about the problems?
So, it’s an easy one this time. There are two main issues with Cursum Perficio. First, the album is freaking long for what it has to offer. A bit of editing would make this punch harder. Also, I’m not sure it’s much better than For All Kings. It’s more of the same. So in a way, Anthrax decided to not mess it up AGAIN (Stopm 442) and go for what works. Wise, but maybe not the most exciting decision. The album plays it safe, and while that’s not a crime, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression either.
A respectable effort. One that shows the band has found its groove in its senior years. Even a hater like me can recognize that. So cheers to Anthrax, so they can keep convincing me that hate is an emotion I shouldn’t have in my cold heart. Yes, that line was as cheesy as a classic Anthrax album.
