Alright, you probably know that I feel next to no love for Deathcore. I’m just not that excited about the constant breakdowns. However, I’ve heard good things about Crown, so of course The Hollowing of Godflesh was my target before this next release date. Can these guys convince me to have faith in the subgenre? Maybe I shouldn’t hold my breath.
Okay, people, this thing is heavy. As in utterly disgusting, inhumane, brutal. I run out of adjectives to describe how much damage this thing can do to the way your family sees you if they ever caught you listening to this ungodly sound. The Hollowing of Godflesh feels like a more simplified and direct version of what Fog Wall offered us not long ago. Yet there’s no mix of styles here—you just get tormented from beginning to end. Cute, right? The riffs are crushing, the drums are relentless, and the whole thing feels like being dragged through a meat grinder.
Despite the abusive amount of breakdowns here, you get enough technicality and speed to get all your twisted cravings satisfied. Also, the vocals sound like my man has a gremlin living in his throat. Don’t expect anything like joy or hope—this thing is like reading one of those Greek tragedies where nobody is left by the end of Act III. Now, to the part that sucks.
The Hollowing of Godflesh has made me interested in its niche like not many bands have done lately. However, it’s still a one-size-fits-all kind of attack, where you might become numb after so much chaos and noise. Only those who think Cattle Decapitation is a soft band can really love what Crown Magnetar has given us here. The album doesn’t offer much variety, and after a while, the relentless intensity starts to blur together.
I’m satisfied with what I’ve got here. It’s nothing romantic. It’s about to send you to hell and back. The mercy left long ago, and what we have left is the hollowing and brutal violence of Crown Magnetar. It’s usually not my thing to enjoy the Core, but when it’s this abrasive and formidable, I have to recognize some of its perks.
