Somehow, Insomnium became one of, if not the biggest Finnish Melodic Death Metal band in town. Not an easy task, considering there are more metal bands in Finland than smiles. So here we are, celebrating one of the most consistent acts in the scene. We’ll review their lows and highs. Get your tissues ready and release the sad puppy living inside each and every one of us.

Aeons ago, when the members of Gorguts released another great Death Metal album, little did they know they would eventually help invent one of the most influential subgenres in the game: Disso-Death. Now, with no guarantee that we’ll ever get another Gorguts album, it’s time to rank the ones we have.

It was about time before I made a Gaerea top. It’s probably the most massive Black Metal band of this decade so far. Love them or hate them, these guys have put Portuguese Metal on the map as much as Moonspell. Even if their music is totally different. Anyway, let’s get to what you came for: disagreeing with me.

Today I felt like committing traffic suicide, because nothing new is coming out of this band as far as I know. However, some of us still long for Agalloch to return, but let’s be real—we’ll get world peace before that happens. Having said that, never has a top been so competitive and yet so easy for me. You almost know how this is going to go, but you want to be sure, right?

We keep approaching the top. As with any Cult of Luna album, that means a huge amount of drama, tension, and long sections. You’ll probably disagree with me, but isn’t that the whole point?

I’ve been waiting forever to do this. Cult of Luna is without a doubt my favorite Post-Metal band. It’s like Neurosis but with better vocals and less abuse. So that’s good for you people who care about morals and stuff. I should also mention this top will include the band’s collaboration with Julie Christmas. I hope you can live with that. Anyway, let’s start.

For some reason that goes beyond my comprehension, Sylosis doesn’t get the love it deserves from us—the media, the critics, the tastemakers. It’s baffling. So I’m here to try to make amends. Let’s go. Enough sleeping on greatness. It’s time to give credit where it’s long overdue.

We have unfinished business with Behemoth, and as we prepare for (whatever these guys do next to) be smeared all over us, let’s continue this journey through its discography. If you haven’t read the first half, click here! Now, without further ado, let’s jump into the best half of this band’s catalogue — the one filled with actual legendary work!

If you follow us on social media, you’ll know I have a complex relationship with Behemoth. This is because the band only has two modes: either it absolutely blasts me away, or it makes me sink into the worst depression ever—because of how much disdain I end up feeling. So in the end, I’m not angry, just disappointed. Join me in this ranking, where we’ll reach the lowest lows and the highest highs Metal can offer before.
